How the 2026/27 league phase is structured
The competition has four leagues. Leagues A, B and C each contain 16 teams split into four groups of four; League D contains six teams split into two groups of three, which is the one structural quirk of the format. Groups are played as a home-and-away round robin.
Teams in Leagues A, B and C therefore play six matches each, while the two League D groups play four. That gives 48 matches in Leagues A, B and C, plus 12 in League D, for a league-phase total of 156.
This edition opens with a prolonged international window: teams generally play four Nations League matches in the 13 days between 24 September and 6 October, then return in November for the last two matchdays.

Kick-off times in European time: CEST vs CET
Schedules are published in local Central European time, and UEFA lists the default slot as "20:45 kick-off unless stated". The important detail for this season is that the league phase straddles the end of European summer time, so two different offsets are in play.
European summer time ends on the last Sunday of October — 25 October 2026. Every matchday up to and including Matchday 4 is played before that date and is therefore in CEST (UTC+2). Matchdays 5 and 6 fall in November and are in CET (UTC+1).
Read the two blocks separately
The conversion tables below are split into two blocks because the offset changes between them. The wall-clock kick-off does not change — 20:45 stays 20:45 — but 20:45 CEST is 18:45 UTC while 20:45 CET is 19:45 UTC.
Because North America also switches off daylight saving in the same period, the US Eastern local time of each slot happens to be identical in both blocks. The UK and Beijing times are not.

Only four kick-off slots are used across the whole league phase.
- 20:45 — the standard slot, used by 109 of the 156 matches.
- 18:00 — the usual early slot, used mostly by League C fixtures and for a handful of southern or eastern European hosts.
- 16:00 — used only for Kazakhstan home matches, because of the time difference.
- 15:00 — the earliest slot in the league phase, used a handful of times.
Only 5 of the 156 League A matches kick off before 20:45, so the headline fixtures are almost all in the standard slot.

Knockout stage, play-offs and finals
The league phase decides who goes where. In League A, the top two teams in each group advance to the quarter-finals, which are played home and away on 25–30 March 2027. Group winners are drawn against a runner-up from a different group and host the second leg.
The four quarter-final winners reach the Nations League Finals, held on 9–13 June 2027 with two semi-finals, a third-place match and the final. The host is selected by the UEFA Executive Committee and had not been confirmed at the time of writing.
In all two-legged ties the winner is decided on aggregate. If the scores are level, extra time is played and then penalties; there is no away goals rule.

Promotion and relegation in 2026/27
This edition is a transition season. From 2028/29 the Nations League moves from four leagues to three, each with 18 teams in three groups of six, and League D is abolished. The promotion and relegation system for 2026/27 was approved by the UEFA Executive Committee on 15 September 2026 specifically to produce those league sizes.
