Premier League · Matchweek 6
English football stops for three weeks and then comes back with ten matches in three days. Here is the full weekend, the state of the table, and what the extended break was actually for.
The Premier League returns on Saturday 10 October 2026 with Matchweek 6. The competition has been paused for 19 days, longer than the usual fortnight, because FIFA merged the September and October international windows into a single extended window this season.
Ten fixtures run from Saturday to Monday and all twenty clubs play. Liverpool host leaders Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon; Manchester United meet bottom club Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday evening; and Arsenal open the weekend at home to unbeaten Leeds United.
The gap ran from the end of Matchweek 5 to the opening kick-off at the Emirates on 10 October. The international window itself closed on Tuesday 6 October.
01Why the League Stopped for 19 Days
A normal international break takes a fortnight: clubs release players, two rounds of national-team fixtures are played, everyone flies home and the league restarts. This one did not work that way.
For 2026/27, FIFA revised the international match calendar and folded the September and October windows together into one extended window. Instead of two short camps either side of a fortnight, national teams got a single block of up to three weeks in which to play as many as four matches — qualifiers, friendlies and tournament preparation in one stretch.
The knock-on effect for clubs is straightforward arithmetic. A longer window means a longer stand-down, so the Premier League played Matchweek 5 and then stepped aside until the window closed on Tuesday 6 October. The league resumes on Saturday 10 October, 19 days after the last ball was kicked.
Why it matters beyond the calendar: clubs lose players to travel and to the injury list at the same time. Two of the weekend’s biggest names came back with problems — Sweden forward Alexander Isak picked up a thigh issue on international duty and Germany’s Kai Havertz returned to Arsenal for treatment — which is exactly the trade-off a three-week window creates.

03What Time Is Kick-off Where You Are
There are six different kick-off slots in Matchweek 6. If you are watching from the United States, this is the conversion you need.
| BST | US Eastern | US Pacific | Which fixture |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12:30 | 07:30 | 04:30 | Saturday early kick-off |
| 14:00 | 09:00 | 06:00 | Sunday afternoon |
| 15:00 | 10:00 | 07:00 | Saturday 3pm block |
| 16:30 | 11:30 | 08:30 | Sunday: Liverpool v Manchester City |
| 17:30 | 12:30 | 09:30 | Saturday evening |
| 20:00 | 15:00 | 12:00 | Monday night |
Both the UK and the US east coast are still on daylight time in mid-October, so the gap is a flat five hours to US Eastern and eight to Pacific. That changes when the clocks move at the end of the month.
04The Table After Five Matchweeks
Five rounds is enough for a picture and not enough for a verdict. One team is perfect, three are unbeaten, and last season’s champions have already lost once.

Manchester City have won all five. Leeds United and Brentford are unbeaten alongside them, and Liverpool, Everton and Leeds are separated only on goal difference. At the other end, Tottenham have taken two points and scored twice.
05Three Fixtures Worth the Wait
Liverpool v Manchester City — Sunday, 16:30, Anfield
The only meeting of the weekend between two sides who finished in last season’s top six. City arrive with five wins from five and the leading scorer in the division in Erling Haaland, on five goals. Liverpool have drawn three of their five and sit sixth on goal difference, with Alexander Isak one behind Haaland on four.
It is also a test of a new-look Liverpool: Andoni Iraola is unbeaten in his first five league matches in charge, a start only Bob Paisley in 1974 and Joe Fagan in 1983 have managed before him at the club.
Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur — Saturday, 17:30, Old Trafford
Two clubs with one win between them across ten matches. United have scored eight and conceded eight; Tottenham have scored two and are bottom of the table. It is the kind of fixture that is decided by which side blinks first, and for both managers it arrives earlier in the season than they would like.
Arsenal v Leeds United — Saturday, 12:30, Emirates Stadium
The champions open the weekend. Arsenal lost their last match before the break, 3–0 at Brighton, and have had three weeks to sit with it. Leeds are one of five unbeaten teams and have not started a top-flight season this well since 2001/02 — but Arsenal have won nine of the last ten meetings between the two, including each of the last seven.
06What Happens Next
The compressed calendar has a second consequence: once the league restarts, it barely stops. Matchweek 6 rolls straight into a weekly rhythm, with European and cup fixtures filling the midweeks.
